The Faces of SPT-Shelia Butler

Who is Shelia Butler?

I’m a true West Texas girl through and through. I love my family, good wine, and Crossfit. Although I spent my early career in healthcare, I’ve spent the last 15 years in the furniture and home décor business. I recently co-founded Handley Drive and do a bit of consulting and professional speaking on the topic of business and lean manufacturing/operations.

What is your CrossFit SPT testimony? How did you find it? What was your first experience like?

Things happen for a reason…the CrossFit gym I started with closed for a few months and I had to find a box in the interim before the new gym opened. During that time I met Casie and she introduced me to CrossFit SPT. Needless to say, I never went back to my old gym. Crossfit SPT welcomed me with open arms and I’ve never looked back. Best decision ever.

What is your greatest memory at CF SPT?

I want to say it’s the day that Shannon and Casie pushed me to stop using 55 lbs for every single lift, but I actually think it’s the moment I walked into SPT for the first time and introduced myself to Shannon. She hopped out of her chair, introduced herself and invited me to join a class. I felt at home that day and feel the same way every day I walk in the door.

What is your purpose, your “why”, when you are in the middle of a tough workout?

The truth is…I’m an old parent and I want to be around and not A ROUND parent. I want to enjoy life with my partner and our boys. I want to be healthy. I want to feel young. I want to be better than I was yesterday. I want to be.

What is one of the biggest misconceptions of CrossFit in your opinion?

I think the biggest misconception about CrossFit is that it’s too expensive. Yes, it’s more than a membership at a global gym, but that’s because it’s MORE than a membership at a global gym. I think it’s important to look at your health and healthcare expenses to truly determine what’s expensive. Preventative care and maintenance is much less expensive…and it’s fun.
